Opera Review: A Rake's Progress



WILLIAM Hogarth's series of paintings A Rake's Progress served as the catalyst for Igor Stravinsky when he saw engravings of these in 1947 at a Chicago exhibition. The cautionary fable of a young man ruined by the pursuit of pleasure fired the composer's imagination and he added a Faustian twist to the tale.
