Giuseppe Verdi was almost 80 years old when he wrote his first major comic opera, but it is a masterpiece, perfectly combining the music and the comedy. The story is based on the character of Sir John Falstaff, as portrayed in three Shakespeare plays: The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV Parts one and two.
