Opera review: La Bohème at the Royal Opera House
GIVEN the power of music to elicit strong emotions, it is hardly surprising that so many opera have tear-jerking scenes, but nothing jerks my tears so consistently as Puccini’s La Bohème. Poor Mimi spends the whole opera dying of tuberculosis, but the contrast between the joie de vivre of the first half and the pathetic hopelessness of the ending is so strong and so well captured by the music that I always find myself drying my eyes during the final applause.
