Der Rosenkavalier review: Controversial version of semi-serious comic opera
RICHARD Jones’s audacious staging of Der Rosenkavalier raised controversy when first seen at Glyndebourne Festival four years ago. It was not just the sight of the Marschallin naked in the shower that caused a stir, but the extraordinary mash-up of the setting that veered in time between the nostalgia of 18th century Hapsburg Austria, where the opera is ostensibly set, to Strauss’s own pre-First World War Vienna.
