OSCAR WILDE'S post-Restoration comedy was his first great play. Beneath the tidal wave of laughs he unlaces the hypocrisies of society and class with surgical skill. It also established him, like his literary hero Ibsen, as a proto-feminist playwright whose sympathies lie more with his female characters than the males.
